Cautious Clay - “Cold War”

~Zumi Underground

Cautious Clay is a Cleveland-born singer/songwriter.  “Cold War” is his debut single--a mellow R&B/Pop track about growing apart from a long-term partner over time.

With lines like “Cause you only swipe right if you fuck for follows”, Clay brings attention to relationships in the digital age and how shallow they can sometimes feel.  In the second verse, he bluntly calls out his partner as being “In it for the monetary growth and power” that can accompany a large social media following.

I don’t want to spend too much time on the lyrics since they’re fairly straight forward.  I do want to mention the steady bass line throughout the song though that gives me a feeling of grounding which is a sharp contrast to the airy pads and guitar chords that give me a floaty sensation.  This possibly represents being rooted to a relationship but feeling that inevitable drifting apart.  Whether that was intended by the artist or not, I thought it was a really cool dichotomy.

Cautious Clay is another young artist that’s just getting started that I think y’all should keep your eyes and ears out for.
