“Moon River (∞ Climax Mix)” ft. @annapantsu - The Consouls

~Zumi Underground

This isn’t the first time I’ve posted about a cover, but I’m pretty sure it’s the first time I’ve done a cover of a cover. I have not seen the source material for the original “Moon River” (the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s), but I did go ahead and listen to the original song to get a better of appreciation for these newer versions.

Bayonetta 2 already this song to another level by doing this initial jazz up, but The Consouls and Anna went a level beyond that! While I adore Keeley Bumford’s soft, sweet, sometimes breathy vocals from the Bayonetta version, I’m a sucker for those power pipes Anna is packing in her version. It’s like the two different sides to Bayonetta, the character. The extra runs she does especially on the last “heartbreaker” makes me melt.

On The Consouls’ side, I always love a good piano break (as in the Bayo version), but they absolutely killed it when they used guitar and sax solos instead! And I’m so happy they added a bass guitar to the song. Having that low end compliment all goodness happening in treble town is part of that extra spice that makes The Consouls’ cover feel a bit fuller to me.

Be sure to check out more from The Consouls. I’ve been following them for a few years now and every song I hear is a banger! I think any jazz lover would appreciate them, but that goes doubly so if you’re a gamer too since jazzing up game OSTs is their niche.
