Ugly Heroes - “Roles”

~Zumi Underground

After the disturbing tragedy we had in Atlanta last week, this song came through my shuffle this afternoon and hit me harder than usual. In the very first line, Red Pill stings us with “I’m terrified of having children in this world” and later in the verse “I can’t imagine having daughters in this world”. While I’m of the opinion that racial prejudice was a factor in the shootings, the killer claimed he targeted the spas due to his sex addiction which sounds like a bullshit excuse reeking of misogyny, an ideology that is arguably losing steam, but it damn sure isn’t happening fast enough.

As the hook says, “In order for things to change, we must all play a part”. That goes for all the bigotry involved in this tragedy and the many many others we’ve had in our history. Give it a listen. I choked up this afternoon when it came on. I got angry all over again as I listened and connected these lyrics to the deaths of:

Soon Chung Park
Hyun Jung Grant
Suncha Kim
Yong Yue
Delaina Ashley Yaun
Paul Andre Michels
Xiaojie Tan
Daoyou Feng

But I think some anger is what we need right now as long as we can turn it into progress.
